If you’re in Beijing and really need to get somewhere but can’t find a taxi – or you need to navigate the narrow alleys in a hutong neighborhood, you can take a bicycle rickshaw. This particular rickshaw was always parked near our apartment in Beijing and it caught my eye, especially because of the gold fringe decorating the top and the way the light hit the rickshaw in the afternoon.

My wife and I spent five months in Beijing, and we lived in a neighborhood that still had hutongs, the traditional alleyways where people live in single-story courtyard houses. This particular doorway caught my eye because of the way it draws the eye in, and creates this feeling of curiosity about what is happening just out of our sight.

My wife and I got three chickens on April 1, 2013, and we were immediately struck by their beauty. Chickens are the sort of utilitarian animal that most think of only in terms of its products: eggs, boneless skinless breasts, drumsticks. But once we started spending time with our chickens it became clear that these creatures have their own personality and beauty. Our chickens lik to perch on a railing on our back porch, and that’s where I painted Little Madrid (our chickens are named after cities we’ve spent time in). Unfortunately, Little Madrid has since died, but we remember her as a strikingly handsome and proud little hen.
